1.    譯詞要點

準確當握詞的暗涵義

(a) average   一般的 (factual 記實性詞語)

mediocre  平庸的 (derogatory 貶義詞語)

(b) saliva 唾液 ( factual, 也是科技用語)

spit 口水   ( usual 常用語詞)

   puke 嘔吐物 (derogatory, 有人稱這類詞為 “陋詞”, ugly words)

(c) antique 古色古香的 (factual, generally approving 一般具有褒義)

   old-fashioned 老式的, 過時的 (slightly disapproving 略帶貶義)

   passé 韶光已逝的, 陳舊的 (slightly derogatory略帶貶義)

鼓勵---煽動        果斷---武斷

成果---後果        保護---庇護

團結---勾結        依靠---依賴

        bureaucracy

準確掌握語氣的輕重

譯者將inhuman workload 譯為“非人所能忍受的工作量”，就是失之過重了。Inhuman在這裡的詞意是 “lacking kindness and sympathy”，譯為“不近情理”似較恰當

Mr. Foster, who had had only one year of typing experience prior to coming, was obviously faced with an inhuman workload.
